Hans Luiten was raised in the Zaanstreek. He is a versatile historian who specialized in the history of Amsterdam, the Zaanstreek, Turkey, the Middle-East, and labourmovements. For more than 10 years he worked as an enthusiastic and passionate teacher in history and in that role accompanied numerous excursions, trips to cities and museums.

As an involved citizen of Amsterdam, Hans Luiten became the chair of the parish council of the Amsterdam urban district Bos and Lommer. His portfolio included the recent constructed square Bos en Lommerplein
and the socially disadvantaged neighborhood the Kolenkitbuurt. When he moved back to the Zaanstreek, he became a city council alderman and was responsible for the city's finances, ports, and the major renovation project Inverdan. He also was a portfolio manager of the urban region of Amsterdam and committee member of the Zaanse Schans. After a year of chairmanship of the board of several comprehensive schools, he decided to go back to his passion: history.

In his free time, Hans Luiten is an enthusiastic traveler. He loves athletic running, yoga and reading. He is married to Pauline and has a son, named Araik
